Your Guide To Moving With Kids

Moving house is stressful in itself. There’s no shortage of things for you to think about in the run-up to the big move, from selling or giving notice at your current property, to refurbishing your new home, to prepping and packing your belongings – it’s a long process and requires a lot of patience.

So, as many know too well, moving with your children in tow can be even more complicated – and often a little more stressful, too.

Luckily, there are certain things that you can do in order to make moving with children that little bit easier, ensuring a smooth moving process and a calm first night in your new home.

Here are just of our top tips for moving house with children.

Keep Them Informed

Moving can be strange for children, especially young children or children who will need to move to an entirely new neighbourhood and sometimes a new school.

With that in mind, make sure you’re not springing new information on them without giving them enough time to come around to the idea. For example, once you know for sure that you will be moving to a new home, it’s best to sit your children down and explain it to them early on within the process.

Young children might be a little confused what this means at first, so make sure they understand what’s happening, especially if this does mean changes to their school or group of friends.

Help Them Get Excited

Moving house is stressful, but it’s also incredibly exciting in many cases!

Get your kids involved with the excitement of moving to a new home by showing them photographs of their new house, garden and bedroom. You could even let them get involved with deciding how their new bedrooms or playrooms are going to look, allowing them to pick out paint colours or different things for their new space.

Make sure they can see that you’re excited to move, too, even if the stress gets a little overwhelming sometimes! If they sense your own excitement to move, it’s likely to rub off on them, too.

Involve Them In The Packing Process

Packing is one of the most time-consuming parts of the moving process, with so many different items and belongings requiring wrapping up and keeping safe. Considering how many of those likely belong to your kids – clothes, toys and other things – you could be facing a pretty big job.

Why not consider having your kids help you with the packing process? Of course, we wouldn’t recommend leaving them to pack up playrooms and bedrooms themselves – we can’t imagine they’d be too adept when it comes to organising the boxes! However, if you’re packing some non-delicate items one day, make a bit of a game out of it and get the children involved.

It’s also ideal if you can start packing your belongings sooner rather than later, which might mean asking your kids to pick out a few of their favourite toys and explaining that they rest of them will need to go away for a while so that they can meet them at the new house!

Organise Childcare If You Can

It’s easier said than done in many cases, but if there’s any way that you can organise childcare on the day of the big move, it’ll make the move a lot less complicated.

You’ve got plenty to think about in the run-up to the move, but we’d still recommend getting this organised as soon as possible to give your babysitter, relative or a family friend plenty of notice so that they can set aside some time to watch the kids for you.

Allow Them To Visit New Schools

If your child will need to move schools as a part of the move, it’s a great idea to see if there’s any way that you can organise an opportunity for them to visit the school for themselves and meet their new teachers before the big day.

Lots of schools will be happy to accommodate this if they can, as it can make the transition from their old school to their new one much easier if they have a chance to check it out and familiarise themselves with their new environment first.
