Moving to a new home is an incredibly exciting process, but that’s not to say that it can’t be a fairly stressful one, too.
There’s so much to plan in the countdown to the big move that so many of us find moving day often creeps up on us a lot faster than we expected. When it comes to moving, one thing is clear – preparation is key.
If you’re looking to move, we know how much you’ll have to think about between now and the sigh of relief that you’ll breathe once you’re all settled into your new place! Allow us to make it a little easier for you here, with our ultimate checklist for moving house.
So, You’ve Found Your New Home… What Now?
Research Services You’ll Need To Move
Whether you are renting a home or purchasing your own property, the largest cost involved in moving to a new home is, of course, usually the home itself.
However, once the forms have all been signed and you have your new home locked in, there are other costs to think about – make sure that you budget for these as early as you can.
Depending on whether you are renting or buying, you may have to think about decorators, electricians, landscapers, builders and removals, among other costs. Here at JMC Removals, we can certainly help you with at least one of those costs, as we pride ourselves on delivering professional removal services at an affordable rate to customers across Warrington, Wigan, Widnes, St Helens and Northwich.
Book All Necessary Services
Once you’ve decided which services you’ll have to call on ahead of the big move, start to make appointments for your moving date to ensure that you won’t be caught short on the big day.
Should you choose to move with JMC, this can be done by giving us a call on 07505 989 348.
Enlist The Help Of Family & Friends
If you think you may need the help of your nearest and dearest on moving day, whether it’s to assist with transport, childcare or other moving needs, it’s best to ask for help well in advance.
Collect Packing Supplies
You’ll probably need plenty of cardboard boxes, tape, bubble wrap and newspaper to pack up all of your belongings, so start ordering and collecting these in advance to ensure that you have everything that you need.
Here at JMC Removals, we’re happy to supply you with everything that you need to get started packing – we’ll even pack and wrap it for you, so be sure to ask us about our packing service when you call!
Notify Relevant Contacts About Your Move
It’s best to notify any relevant people of your move a few weeks in advance so that you can start having your letters sent out to your new address. By ‘relevant people’, we mean insurance providers, doctors, dentists – anyone that would usually get into contact with you via post.
This is also a good opportunity to sort out your utilities – contacting your gas and electric providers, scheduling to have broadband set up, etc.
Have A Clear Out
The more belongings you have, the more complicated it will be to pack! We’re all guilty of taking boxes with us from home to home, some remaining unpacked for years. Simplify your packing process by doing a little spring cleaning – pre-loved items can always be sent to charity shops, while others can be disposed of ahead of moving day.
This includes getting rid of any furniture that you aren’t taking with you to your new abode, which can generally be donated to charity or sold online. Alternatively, you could always put any extra furniture in storage.
The best place to start is by beginning with the items that you are unlikely to need between now and your moving day, such as ornamental items or those that don’t get a great deal of use.
Decorative items such as photographs, ornaments, books, DVDs and other decorative objects may make your house feel a little more like a home, but if you can go without them for a few weeks, you’ll make the packing process much easier later on.
Order Any New Essential Items
It may be the opposite of ‘clearing out’, but if there’s any items you’ll need for your new home that you don’t currently possess, it’s best to order these ahead of time. While it means having to take them with you, it also means that you won’t be waiting on the delivery of important items once you have moved.
Pack Frequently Used Items
Pack up the remainder of your smaller items, such as cutlery, plates, glassware, bathroom products, bedroom furnishings, clothes and such. Basically, if it will be transported to your new home in a box or a bag, pack it up!
Moving day can be long and tiring, so it’s a good idea to pack a bag full of your overnight essentials so that you don’t need to go digging around in boxes later on in the day.
By ‘essentials’, we mean a couple of days worth of clothing, cutlery, plates & glasses for each person, daily use toiletries and such.
By the morning of your move, your home should be feeling pretty empty, with everything in boxes other than the furniture going into the removal van.
It’s a good idea to get a list together of every box or furniture piece so that you can take stock before you leave and after you arrive at the new home. Once everything is loaded up into the removal van, be sure to do one last sweep of the home to ensure you’ve left nothing behind – don’t forget to check the cupboards.
Finally, you’re ready to head to your new destination – home, sweet home!
